Velochat

The problem

Perth bunch rides were organised across four WhatsApp groups, a Strava club and a spreadsheet. Riders missed rides, routes arrived as screenshots and people turned up at the wrong corner.

How I approached it

  1. The ride is the unit. Posting one creates its chat room, so the plan, the route and the people stay together.
  2. RSVP is one tap and posts itself into the chat, so the organiser sees who is coming without counting thumbs.
  3. Routes come from a GPX file, Strava or Garmin and show as a map with an elevation profile, never a screenshot.

What I built

  • Rides

Date, meeting point, distance, pace and a cap on riders. Recurring rides weekly or fortnightly.

  • Clubs

A home for each club with members, admins and its upcoming rides.

  • Chat

Real-time messages, mentions, photos, GPX previews and mute for a few hours.

  • Route book

A personal library of routes, synced from Strava and shared to any chat in two taps.

Where it is now

Velochat is published on the App Store and Google Play, free and available worldwide, at version 1.6.
